The Manchester Grammar School’s ornate Memorial Hall has been completely redecorated by our team, ahead of the school’s 500th anniversary in 2015.

Working in partnership with the school and other trades over an eight week period, we carefully refreshed the stunning hall, which will host celebrations to mark the milestone birthday next year.

With the use of scaffolding, extensive preparations were carried out by our team ahead of the decoration work, including the washing and light abrasion of timber panelling, which was later treated with specialist wood oil in order to maintain the life cycle of the new coating.

We delicately completed intricate work in the room, honouring a tradition adopted by the school of leaving one decorative leaf on the 12-metre high ceiling unfinished, while painting the rest.

A classic colour scheme was chosen for the hall by Crown Paints, and we carried out the work sensitively, around distinguished features such as striking stained glass windows. Our work for the grammar school – a new client – was valued in the region of £25,000.

The Memorial Hall is the primary location for prize-giving assemblies at the school and sits inside the main building of the school, which was founded in 1515. The school building itself was finished in 1931 and the Memorial Hall commemorates the First and Second World Wars.
