Atkins designed Omani boutique hotel opens for business

A stunning new Atkins-designed boutique hotel and resort in Jabal Akhdar, a spectacular location overlooking a gorge among Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains, has opened its doors to guests for the first time.

Perched 2,000 metres above sea level, the five-star, 86-suite hotel and resort is being run by luxury operator Alila.

Alila Jabal Akhdar is an exceptional addition to Oman’s high-end tourist destinations and a catalyst for further development in one of the Sultanate’s most beautiful regions.

Atkins has been involved with the development from inception through to completion on behalf of client Omran, the company set up by the Government of Oman to deliver major projects and to manage assets and investments in the tourism sector.

Marco Malpiedi, managing director of Atkins in Oman, said:

“The stunning natural surroundings for this project were a fantastic inspiration for our design team, but it was also extremely important to ensure the development complements and sits in harmony with the local environment.

“A great deal of work went into finding the optimum orientation to make the most of the site’s location so it offers uninterrupted views to the canyons below.”

Atkins provided full architectural, geological and multidisciplinary engineering design services for Alila Jabal Akhdar, including construction supervision. The remoteness of the site was a key challenge during design and construction, but this also reinforced the need to maximise use of local products and materials wherever possible.

Eng. Wael Al Lawati, Omran CEO, praised Atkins’ hard work and dedication on the completion of the project on time. He said: “Achieving this major milestone is a testament to the qualities that Atkins, our design and engineering consultant and the local contractor, Dawood Contracting, possess and their tireless efforts to have made this possible.”

Traditional Omani construction techniques have been combined with locally inspired contemporary architecture throughout the project. Internally, the design and décor celebrates Oman’s rich history and culture. The resort also features a full range of facilities including a restaurant and lounge, outdoor pool, indoor pool, gym and spa.

Marco added:

“Alila Jabal Akhdar is significant because not only is it a fantastic addition to Oman’s selection of high end hotels, but it will also drive further investment to support sustainable, well-planned tourism in the area.”

“This in turn will further stimulate local businesses and employment opportunities. We’re delighted to have been involved in the project’s success and it’s another impressive entry into our portfolio of completed projects in Oman and the Middle East.”

Atkins has been providing engineering, design and project management expertise in Oman for more than 30 years and has played a key design and construction supervision role in some of the Sultanate’s most high profile projects, including the Barr Al Jissah resort, the Asian Beach Games and The Wave, Muscat.
